Sozin’s Comet
Avatar Season Finale Spoilers all over the fucking place, including the comments, so watch out bitches!
So this podcast is the Opinions of Zoë and…Tater. Luna is unfortunetely absent due to schedule differences, but we will cast with her very soon. We are a little more serious this time, and this podcast was created RIGHT AFTER we finished watching the Series Finale. Normally we would have waited for Luna, but our heads were exploding with opinions/rants/commentaries/theories/etc that we had to start recording immediately. This is also our longest podcast ever, so be forwarned. And yes, there is a bit of Star Wars (damn you Tater!) but she got my (Zoë) permission first! I even make a Star Wars reference, to my own demise, but since when did podcasts ever go as planned? Or, when did we actually plan podcasts?
My apologies to Luna fans, and Luna (since she doesn’t know that we did this) but did TRY to get her in on it, but she had to wake up early for work, so sorry! We do have links to some of Luna’s notes, so I will post them here. You are also free to post all the spoilers you want here.

Great podcast! It was really, really productive this time xD. & Taters, you are awesome >:D I missed Luna, but it’s all good
Oh and i think you should ask them about either the cycle of the avatar or about Zuko’s mom. (perhaps a spinoff of some sort?)
Nicole said this on July 20th, 2008 at 11:15 am
I think the reason the transformation between Katara and Zuko was awkward because there wasn’t any causal interaction between them while they were tracking down the guy who killed Katara’s mom.
I mean the only time they talked it lead to a flashback, but I think if there had been more causal interaction between them it wouldn’t have been so awkward.
You know them talking, interacting, Katara letting out some more fusterations, or even Zuko letting out some deep fear that his mother could be dead. Something that led to a hug, ‘cuase that hug at the end of the episode in Southern Raiders was waaaaaaay to comfortable between the two, so that led me to believe that they hugged before. Zuko’s not a very physical affection guy so that hug was kinda unbelievable to me.
And about Aang’s chakra; Aang stated himself that his chakra was blocked, not inaccessable. So I’m not surprised that he was able to use it but it was a silly way of getting him to use it.
I NEVER STOPPED LISTENING! You guys really picked up my spririts. I avoided spoliers so I got my hopes up and I literally ended up crying after it finished. I really got my hopes up and cired hard. So you guys really did help lift up my spirits. Thanks.

I found the last episode to be really disappointing. I was left with more questions than answers. All the questions I had you guys had too so that was awesome.

Definitely a more… serious/lengthy discussion on more technical and intellectual things. In regards to the whole “Where do Airbenders come from?” Booter-Freak did a spoof for it a while ago. Push the download button: http://booter-freak.deviantart.com/art/Gyatso-Explains-It-All-76315294
I suggest not drinking anything, particularly soda while viewing it.
There were a lot of topics that definitely begged for more discussion. The whole history thing, yes, could have been just incorporated into the already existing seasons without having to go into a whole Air season. If you’re in the industry for shows and such like that, it’s difficult to go into the more deeper and technical stuff without losing the interest of your audience. Plus, it’s hard to make a story on that without a real main character, so if what you guys ranted off about on the whole beginning of Avatars and the four elements sphiel, it would have to be better worked in to the already existing episodes.
But they DIDN’T do that, so we speculate at most. Also, we can’t rule out the possibility that the creators themselves did NOT think of it rather than just have a vague outline. I say this because I’m a big fan of a 90’s cartoon show called “Gargoyles” by Disney, and the creator, Greg, has this whole website where he answers fan questions and has been doing it for the past ten plus years.
He admitted that some of his explanations were made up on the spot when the fans asked because he didn’t think about it before. And the more they asked, the more solidified his explanations, and history of the world he created became.
Another thing I would like to point out besides the whole History thing are the characters. We speculated in the past that Azula might be using her father, manipulating him for her own means. After watching the finale, me and Madi have come to realize that NO. Despite what we might think of her, Azula is a Daddy’s girl. She is attention driven and does it for the approval of her Father, much the way Zuko does only she is more obsessed by that goal. Especially when he leaves her behind and you can see that she feels ABANDONED, by the one person that she admired. Sure, she has followers that stay with her out of FEAR. Her Dai Li agents, her servants. And then her friends, who ultimately, she drove all of them away herself.
So when Ozai tells her he’s going without her, you can see that she’s angry not because she feels I don’t know… mutinied over power. But because she always felt like she would be the one to be by her Father’s side. Ultimately, she doesn’t want to be treated like ZUKO, who was always shunned and left out of Daddy’s love and attention. But the minute–THE MINUTE Ozai says, “There’s nobody else I can trust but you,” she perks up. She didn’t even consider for a second that her Father might be fooling her, as we always suspected she might have. She genuinely believed him. Her father was her idol, and it is that feeling of abandonment by him that really pushes her.
And that whole mirror scene with Ursa really reinforces this. I think she puts up a front that she could care less about what her Mom thinks of her, but in the end, you can tell that it really affected her. She wanted to be the star child. The one BOTH her parents loved most. When she couldn’t get that from Ursa, she condemned her Mother altogether, and feels bitterness and rivalry towards Zuko who got something that she never did. She didn’t really understand that despite all the bad things she did, her Mother still loves her dearly, and that to Ursa, it was never about if Zuko was the better child. She loved them both, equally, and Azula couldn’t grasp nor could she accept it. In the end, all we can really know for sure is that she is terribly lonely and she has no one to blame but herself. She is her own downfall that’s what makes her such a tragic character. You can’t help but feel sorry for her when she falls, even though you know she can’t meet any other end but that. You want her to meet redemption, but it’s impossible. Tragic.
The whole sword thing with Sokka? I didn’t think was a big deal. Because honestly? He can get more weapons. But I do agree that it is BULLSHIT when the creators say that Sokka hasn’t lost anything.
I think my favorite scene in this whole finale thing was when Sokka tricked all of the soldiers and engineers to the bottom hull for a Birthday surprise and they stood around and talked like they were awkward office workers around the cooler. Brilliant. Simply BRILLIANT lines and timing.
There’s more I can say about this whole thing, but I think I’d have to start my OWN podcast to do it, lol. Nice having you with us Tater. Do hope Luna comes back soon though just because I know she took like pages and pages of notes and I wonder what she’s going to say about them all.

Great comments so far guys, and Tater says ‘Thanks for the support!’
We would have podcasted longer, but I swear to buddha that if we didn’t start sleeping soon, there would have been for ‘Cheezy Ballz’ discussion, and I think it would have been chaotic.
We also wanted to save some content for Luna, and she knows more intimiate details about Avatar than we do, so we will most DEFINETELY be having another podcast very very soon. We could even devote an entire podcast to Azula, that is how much I still have to say about the Finale.
Hopefully we can get with Luna soon, cause I’m sure you’re dying to get her opinions.
Zoë said this on July 20th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
Yeah Youkai and I talked about Azula a lot. I think we both agree that was the most tragic and emotional thing to happen through the finale. The whole thing was her spiraling down, which began when she lost Mai and Ty Lee. I was one of the people who thought she was trying to manipulate her father, and was all about the power, but we did realize by the way she acted in the finale, it was about approval, mostly her father’s. But we also see that not feeling like she got her mother’s greatly affected her. The reason that came out, I believe, is because her father left her behind, so she felt completely abandoned. It surfaced her feelings toward her mother and confirmed that Ursa’s opinion did matter to her. Her whole story was so tragic yet I loved every second of it. I felt they concluded her story very well, especially since up until the finale, there wasn’t anything really confirmed about her history or why she was the way she was. There was the scene in the beach, but the way it was done it appeared as if it didn’t really matter to her. During the finale, though, the questions about her were pretty clearly answered and I was really glad, because I was always really intrigued by her character…course I’ve always had an interest in the crazy ones ^^’
Ok, that was more of a response to Youkai’s comment, but about the podcast…wow a lot of discussion on the Avatar world itself. It was pretty interesting because I think everyone has those questions, but it’s more of a thing most people kind of accept as something to be left in such a vague way. I think a guide would be helpful, like the whole Star Wars thing Tater talked about. I’ll admit while that stuff is interesting, I’m not someone who goes out and tries to figure those things out. I love to hear your speculations, because I sure as heck can’t come up with that. I like speculating more on the characters and the psychology of them.
But I will say that I don’t like that they threw in that lion turtle at the end without ANY buildup or explanation on him, yet he was apparently so important in the final battle! Why did they throw out all the other themes to the Avatar state and defeating of the firelord if they were going to do that? That’s the question you need to ask! Someone needs to ask why it was thrown in at the last second, disregarding all of the previous buildup and themes. I also would like to know about Ursa. Why did they promise us that Zuko would be looking for her when it was like a 2 second scene of him asking Ozai without even an answer? That doesn’t count as looking Bryke! I guess they just messed up their wording, or were tricking us, or I don’t know, but I’m sure there are plenty of fans that will bring that up.

OMG this is amazing xD You guys are really awesome so far. this is the first podcast i have listened to (I feel really bad about that. I have read the fics though..) I think you made a lot of good points. they should have elaborated more rather that do an outright “deus ex machina” D:
As for the elements they use, that was the old european table of elements xD Before like ferrum and oxygen and stuff xD
It was basically the states of matter and light. Obviously that doesn’t really apply anymore because waterbenders can bend solids (ice) and vapor and stuff and Earthbenders can bend lava…ithink…
anyways, I like this a lot. I may not listen to the previous eps. I lost a lot of zutara hope *sigh* but I’ll listen to future ones. xD

This one should have been called JERKBENDING!!!!
I hate you guys.
If I find a mic I’m recording my own and calling it the real Sozin’s comet and it will be GREAT and completely lacking in Star Wars!
Ummmm….I think Azula has gotten to me. Anyway, I’m not going to listen to this until I can write down all my theories/ questions. My 4 pages of notes were all on things specific to the episode, not really anything beyond what we saw.
Once I get rolling you bitches wont know what hit you! Muwahahaha! (PS: I love Melon Lord Toph.)

I have to say Melon Lord Toph was my favorite out of all of this. Kinda creepy though how Sokka cut the Melon Lords head off and says “that’s how its done!” Everyone was getting a bit ticked off at Aang’s selfishness….not putting the good of the many (the world) above the good of the few (Himself and his beliefs)…I mean even that half bald airbender lady told him that the avatar isn’t allowed to reach spiritual enlightenment because he has to many earthly responsibilities. And another thing….didn’t what bald airbender lady tell him completely contradict what the “Guru” said? NAAARRRRR!!! I’m confused.

Sigh…I cant say the finale didn’t have its good parts, but still…I am very torn between love and hate for the finale…
My bigest peve with the finale is the Ursa part…seriously, like WTF? The creators said the Zuko would be going to look for his mother, but did he? They also said that it would be very improtant to the sory too…but they saved it for the last five minutes like it was an afterthought…
I had an Avatar party on the night of the finale, and the whole time I was sitting next to my Maiko friend…he avoided all of the Sozins comet spoilers so he was watching and experiencing everything as it came (unlike me who knew exactly what was going to happen) and even he admitted that he was positive that Zutara was going to happen. I mean wtf? they gave us so many hints and foreshadowing for Zutara, but then they have that lame ending with Kataang. I feel that they just baited us on the entire episode just to hook us for dinner…its like “Oh Aang, after nearly 60 episodes of being either oblivious or ambiguous to your feelings, I’ve finally decided that I lovee you…I mean, who needs any development? this is a kids show!” and I hate that Aang had to sacrifice nothing at all! Its like he got by on sheer dumb luck! What was even the point of mastering the elements if he was going to use none of it and just go all avatar state?
And the whole Maiko thing pissed me off! I mean, if he loved her as much as they wanted us to believe, then why didnt he break her out of prison right away? He’s the freaking firelord, its not likt they are going to tell him that he cant get his girl! Its almost like he completely forgot about her! Oh yes…thats true love right there…
gosh, I hate telling anyone but zutarians that I hated the finale because they always assume that its because of kataang or maiko, but its freaking not! I would have accepted the ending of the show’s end pairings if it had been more developed. Everything was just so sudden!
Wow, I loved the discussion about the unanswered questions, you guys brought up some really intresting points and I hope you can get some of yor questions answered durring the pannel. I never realised that there were so many holes in the avatar universe. I wish they would have made an air book!

Hey guys!
First of all, I love you two (and Tater!) and your podcasts. We need more reasonable Zutarians, instead of the crazed, over-emotional, crying Zutarians. (You know who i’m hinting at!) Anyway, the main reason I’m commenting, and this is a totally, incredibly delayed reaction, but I was listening over again, and I had thought about your Airbender celibacy theory. What if not all Airbenders are celibates? What if the heads of each temple designated a select few Air Nomads to mate with each other and produce Airbenders? I suppose they’d have a rigorous process for choosing which Airbenders produced the offspring, maybe based on bending ability, spiritual enlightenment, etc, but I don’t know if it’s possible for the nomads just to adopt children and make them Airbenders. Then how would the Avatar cycle pass on to the Air Nomads? I don’t think the Avatar Spirit would just pass on to a baby abandoned in a ditch in the Earth Kingdom only to be picked up by some Air Nomads.
I might not have made much sense, because it’s 1:14 am over here on the East Coast (Aha! You do have an East Coast fan!) and I’m a big fan of sleeping, so my brain might be sticky and full of nonsense. But I think that’s something to chew on for awhile.
Can’t wait for the next podcast! Much love from the East Coast!
Katie said this on July 26th, 2008 at 10:18 pm
I liked parts of the finale, hated parts with a passion, and get twitches every time someone calls it epic. Because it wasn’t for SO many reasons that I’m kind of tired of going over, but you guys pointed out a lot.
I’m interested in Tater’s Star Wars Avatar podcast, and I’m going to be sticking around for a lot more because you guys are fun, intelligent, and take off on random side tangents that keep me amused. Cheeseball Bending. Now THERE’S something I’d like to see.
I loved Toph as the Melon Lord, though it surprised me when Sokka just cut his head in half and was like, “That’s how you do it” to Aang, and then MOmo . . . eats the brains. O_o I seriously got a little queasy, even though it wasn’t someone’s head, but the thought of it? Wow.
My two favorite parts of the finale? The battle between Azula and Zuko, and Zuko attacking Aang to “teach him a lesson” in the very first episode. I was screaming, “It’s about fucking TIME!” because all of the other original GAang members were still babying him, and it wasn’t until Zuko went after him that I think that point got across. Though Mommy!Katara was still, “You could have hurt Aang!” Um, Hello? War here, people get hurt all the time! *sigh*
More love from the East Coast! I’ve been internetless, so I”m playing catch up with your podcasts. ^^
