Sozin’s Comet - the book.
Warning: This podcast contains Sozin’s Comet spoilers, and we discuss all aspects of it, which includes the finale of Avatar, the Last Airbender. I’m sure the comments will contain spoilers as well, so back off bitches if you don’t want to be spoiled. Der.
Yup, you guys asked for it, so we’re giving it to you. Luna and I didn’t plan on posting this podcast until after the finale had aired, but…you guys are clearly extremely impatient, so whatever man. I know I said I was going to wait till Wednesday, but why wait? Only Kataangers wait, and people who smell, and I don’t even know what the heck I’m talking about anymore. Ok, yeah. We discuss the book, clearly, and rant a little about Nick’s bad management issues, and I’m sure we discuss some other off-topic things that I don’t remember…I guess you should just listen and find out, eh?
Enjoy, my fellow Zutarians.

).
Also, from what you’ve said.. the ending is not at all like I expected.. or even wanted. (still haven’t read the book, but I can’t get down to Borders ): )
Oh, but I need to take a picture of this hair salon in town for you guys. In your last podcast, you mentioned hair bending. xD This hair salon’s name is Hairbenders! LOL

I actually haven’t read the book yet, so you guys are my biggest spoilers. I thought of this from the moment you mentioned the whole process in which Aang opens up his seventh chakra. I guess if it’s so straightforwardly put that way in the book it might come off as random and nonsensical. Hopefully, it won’t be the case in the actual finale, but here’s how I think that might work from a critical point of view. It could be that it is BECAUSE Aang loves Katara that he is able to unlock his chakra. Perhaps it is in his realization that to save the loves her and wants to save her, and in saving her saves the world, that he is able to let her go.
It’s probably one of those “I’m doing this for your own good” kind of thing, and while it may not have translated all that well, I think this is what the writers were trying to get across. I’m a buddhist myself, and though that might be irrelevant in the end…maybe some of it might add to the insight? I don’t know, this is the only solution that I could come up with that might actually work for the whole chakra thing.

“Perhaps it is in his realization that he the loves her and wants to save her, and in saving her saves the world, that he is able to let her go.”
Wow… I should proof read my comments XP
Youkai Yume said this on May 24th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
i’m a big fan of buddism myself and know a lot about “zen” philosophy, so i can sort of see where your reasoning is, but at the same time, i’m still really confused. my thinking is, when we meditate, we let go of everything else, and ease into the path of least resistance, focusing our minds’ energy on what it is we want, especially in chakra meditation. so i cant understand why him holding on to the physical world in a way that separates him from his spiritual goal would open ANY chakra, let alone the one that is the key to the avatar state. because that is when he is most in tune with both physical and spiritual realms, it would be crucial for him to let go and tap all that cosmic energy, you know? am i making any sense at all? probably not, but o well….i just don’t get it at all, if anything, it totally contradicts both story line and philosophy the show is centered around. this is especially disappointing for me because i used to think they stayed pretty true to the beliefs that are typically centered around kung fu martial arts, its not just a way to fight, its a way of life.
sorry for the tangent, lol………i just couldn’t help it, hahaha………
jay said this on May 24th, 2008 at 11:46 pm
im sorry! one more thought, i actually think that because of the focus on balance and the emphasis on yin-yang in season one and the constant reminders of good in bad and bad in good, that it would be more appropriate to say that the “philosophy of avatar” is based more off of taoism/daoism, though i could be wrong. heck, they might not even have any kind of philosophy behind the events in the show, though that would explain a lot, haha jk……….
jay said this on May 25th, 2008 at 12:06 am
umm, jay, as your friend, i must tell you that you need a new hobby. its a CARTOON! lol let it go buddy……. i heart u still tho….
:D
cassie said this on May 25th, 2008 at 1:15 am
I have to agree with Jay. That was my exact trail of thought, and I don’t know a whole lot about chakras and buddhism and tao crap (but I do want to read Tao Te(h) Ching and get a slight understanding for asian philosophy) so that’s on my to do list, and hopefully by the next podcast I will be able to yell some more about that.
- Zoë
Zoë said this on May 25th, 2008 at 3:27 am
More than likely, it’s probably that in the moment that he realized he loved her, and needed to let her go that he finally is able to clear his mind. Katara becomes part of the bigger picture which is the world in which he needs to save. Heck, she might have become the representation of the world to the kid.
The path of least resistance would actually for Aang to give in to his worldly possessions. When Buddha went into meditation he encountered several temptations, and he had to resist them where normal men would have faltered. I mean, we can hash this out all we want but the truth of it is, we have limited time left, and if they intend to put a whole new element into it (the sea lion turtle) then they’re going to have to cut it somewhere.
The whole guru episode where he easily unlocks all of his other chakras to me, as an actual buddhist is ALSO rushed. But how long can they animate inner emotions and the actual process it takes to accept and let something go? People have been trying to do it their whole lives, and only few have done it and reached enlightenment. Aang is twelve. And we’re running out of episodes. What can you do?
Youkai Yume said this on May 25th, 2008 at 9:29 am
yay, i love it when zoe yells, haha………good luck reading Tao Te Ching though, you’ll probably find it astoundingly boring, but idk. i understood what it meant a lot better when someone explained it to me, and when i read other books that analyzed it, but its a good thing to have read anyways i guess…….
ya, it is true that aangs path of least resistance would be to give in to his worldly possessions, but if thats true then he’ll never let go, and so, how can he reach enlightenment?
i also have to say, i totally agree that the guru was way rushed. personally, i’ve spent months working just to let go of one thing, and im 22 and have been a student of the Way since i was 17. i just cant imagine how a twelve year old can possibly achieve what he did in like 15 min i mean come on!
at the same time, i know that they cant really go into all that and that it would take a lot of time that they didnt have, but im still kinda bummed about the way it was handled. idk, i guess that, combined with all the other screw ups theyve made is just a little too much for me. i hope im not being too harsh here, but i kinda think they ruined avatar. it couldve been a really good finale, where at least things make sense, but no, they had to bring in sea lion turtles and all that…..
o well, theres a million and one things wrong with the finale all together, o and i completely agree about the hp epilogue, it was……… wrong, just plain wrong……
Jay said this on May 25th, 2008 at 11:31 am
I can’t judge the finale just yet, especially since we haven’t seen it. Maybe seeing it will make more sense than actually reading it, and until then I’m withholding my judgment. Avatar is a blend of all sorts of martial arts and religious practices, and it’s hard to interpret that. We all just have to hope for the best. I agree with Zoe and Luna though when they say the ending outgrew the plot. But sometimes it’s just one of those things were the show became it’s “baby” and changing it feels hard to swallow. Oh well.
Letting go of attachments is mostly an internal thing. Letting go of anger–like when we feel resentment for someone after a fight, letting go of sadness–like when we just sit and regret about things we’ve done, and other little petty things like that are just little ways that we gradually grow into better, more well balanced people.
It’s a shame that this whole balance thing, which was always so important throughout the series, was only brushed upon when it came down to the final showdown. But again, not in any position to judge it yet. I still have meager hope for Bryke to make it up with all the things in between. This has been a most enlightening conversation. ^^
What a nice pace for a change.

cassie said this on May 25th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
o__0″ No Toph perspective!? This guys really can’t write over five or so characters don’t they? How the hell she doesn’t get some awesome fighting scenes and enemies in a place were probably everything is made of metal? Have these guys even seeing the picture they have made of the Fire-Nation? Everything is made of metal… Hope they at least give her awesome fighting sequences..
The the whole Zuko Vs Azula, really dislike the whole thing, personally it would had being Zuko’s win, not an easy one tho, cause I feel its not like a real victory if the girl is loosing her mind, but maybe that’s just me, and actually… yeah the whole sacrifice thing its like awesome, Zuko jumping between deadly lightning and Katara its a clasic, even if almost every Zutara fanfic has it, I think they sort of made it… don’t know… I know they didn’t wanted to kill anyone but we all knew Azula had to die, personally I think Zuko could had sent it back right at her and have it over with, the whole ‘ice-prision’ would actually kill her faster but ok XDDD
The whole ‘All Avatar’s are wrong but Aang’ thing its like damn lame, like WTF!? Seriously… you can go ahead and save the world, yeah it’ll hurt like crap or whatever, but you have to do it…
Random stuff keeps popping up everywhere, the Guru’s wisdom isn’t worth crap it seems, jus not digging the plot development so far, I mean, yeah I kinda get the Guru was like just one episode so they couldn’t give Aang real spiritual growth as it should be cause they didn’t got enough time… *Sarcastic tone* here’s an idea tho, why don’t use all those filler episodes and make a few of those into spiritual awareness steps? Even without him getting it right away, or even right from the begining, seven episodes each with as much as a scene where he subconciously makes peace with one of his chakras, I remember having read a Taang fic with that fel to it, Seven Chakras Seven Lessons or something like that, I’ll have to cheek my favorites xDD But something like that, involving all characters would have being nice, every one in the Gaang having unconciously ‘guided’ Aang to the right path, the whole talk about ‘Destiny’
Great way to resolve the whole ‘Giving up Katara’ thing, just brush it off like it had never happened… and to further injury that whole ‘SpiritBending’ crap. Gods avode that was the cheapes way of saying: Ok we don’t know what to do now… lets just make the bad guy good somehow and give up
Sorry for the long rant, but yeah it kinda stings, I am not even that annoyed by the curve ball with it turning so Zutara and then going ridiculous in the last page as much as the way they just brushed off their own plot
As far as the put cast itself, just agree wholeheartedly with you guys… it isn’t a good ending for such a good show… Sokka losing his weapons its a hard blow for a warrior, I know I would hate to lose my Starmetal sword xDD But even if he was a Samurai which he isn’t he could get a new sword
As always you crack me up XD I just wish I had an easier time spending an hour or so on the Computer to listen to you guys, keep the great work coming!!

Jessie said this on June 1st, 2008 at 11:29 pm
so when are you guys going to post a podcast about the how avatar is totally like star wars??
totally not tater said this on June 2nd, 2008 at 4:40 pm
…I’m not so sure about the Star Wars thing…. but ok…
Jessie said this on June 2nd, 2008 at 5:04 pm
i assume your talking about the prequels?
umm, i can kinda see the star wars thing, actually, as far as letting go of attatchment. its the same consept, which makes sence, because star wars is also based off of asian philosophy, so i would think they would share some common ground.
and that little detail about a boy liking a girl way older than him. i mean, in avatar it was bad enough, in star wars, she had like, 5 yrs on him, ewww…..and look how THAT turned out….yikes!
so ya, the moral of the story is: dont date really powerfull guys that are younger than you, and cant let go of their attachments……lol
cassie said this on June 3rd, 2008 at 11:09 am
heck to the freak no i ain’t talkin’ bout no prequels! although i have many a time told zoë and luna about the similarities of the anakin/padme relationship and aang/katara, but mostly i bug them relentlessly about the original trilogy and avatar, i’m a HUGEMONGOUS star wars fan (OT only) and these 2 doofuses got me way hooked on avatar, so now they have to suffer the wrath of what they have created: a star wars addicted avatar fan
totally not tater said this on June 3rd, 2008 at 2:58 pm
omg, im a die-hard star wars fan, i swear, and yes the OT rocks, i think its better than the prequels, like waaay better, but thats just me, lol….ya, my friends are like, cassie, if you wanna talk about star wars and avatar all day, go sit with the geeks…..and im sort of obsesive, so when i like something, i REALLY like it, wanna talk bout it all the time, hahaha
but what about the OT do u think is similar to avatar?
cassie said this on June 3rd, 2008 at 5:04 pm
whoo hoo! yes, SW is awesom! the prequels sucked, but i gotta say, it was worth it for me to stare at natalie portman for 3 hrs, aahahahaha, wow……
jay said this on June 3rd, 2008 at 5:46 pm
omg there have been so many comparisons made between the OT and avatar by me that zoë pretty much stops listening to me when i start, like i used the OT to justify why zutara totally pwns kataang, because zuko is kind of like the rogue type who totally deserves the girl, a la han solo, and also i’ve made the connection between zuko and darth vader and how the story really becomes about them instead of the “main hero” because its kind of a given that the hero will succeed, like we all know that eventually luke will prevail and that aang will defeat the fire lord, but the gals won’t listen to me and make a star wars/avatar podcast, i’ll see what i can do to convince them
totally not tater said this on June 3rd, 2008 at 6:25 pm
by the way, i’ve totally sabotaged your podcast, mua ha ha!!
totally not tater said this on June 3rd, 2008 at 6:26 pm
haha, a SW/avatar podcast??? lol, now that would be interesting, tho, honestly, zoe and luna crack me up so much, i think id listen to them even if they werent talking about avatar…..
that actually makes alot of sence, the way the story line shifts to the “villian gone good” and focuses more on his internal struggle. there is also the fact that in both series, it was inevitable for some of the characters to get together. in the OT it was obvious from the start that somebody was going to be with leia, and then we found out she was lukes sister, and well, that cut out any posibility of romance there. so, the obvious runner up, was han solo, who most ppl wanted her to be with anyways.
in avatar, however, katara has two main options, aang and zuko, neither of which are related to her, so that makes things quite different. also the fact that zuko might still have had feelings for mai, which just complicates it more
so my point is, i can understand comparing the two “bad” guys, and a shift in story line, but honestly, not on the relationship end of it i guess……
cassie said this on June 3rd, 2008 at 9:22 pm
dude the relationship aspect totally works, katara is totally like the mother for aang and sokka, toph clearly mentions this, so we do have a sort of familiy relationship between aang and katara which totally makes it awkward for them to be together, and we don’t even realize that luke and leia are brother and sister until return of the jedi, and if you ask me, george lucas himself didn’t know that until he was making jedi either, i don’t buy that he knew every aspect of the storyline before he made the flicks, but thats a whole different argument, anyhoo, even in empire we still have a “wil they, won’t they” with luke and leia until han and leia get it on on hoth, but that’s my argument, that katara is totally a motherly figure for aang, and unless he decides to go all oedipus on us i really think that zuko is her best match, that does of course suck for mai because i do totally feel bad for her in “the boiling rock pt. 2″ but still, she can go hook up with the flying cripple kid, plus if you wanna look at prequel shit katara would be like padme in phantom menace and aang clearly would be anakin, and um, we all know how peachy THAT relationship turned out, but yeah, looking at just the OT, katara is destined to be with zuko, even if all these dang teeny boppers who don’t know any better think that kataang rules….. which it doesn’t
totally not tater said this on June 4th, 2008 at 2:28 am
well, that is true, about them not knowing about leia until ROTJ, but by then, shed already been all over han, and it was obvious she loved him, not luke, at least, in that way.
in zutara vs. kataang, theres been aang kissing katara and then nothing o the zutara end so far that we’ve seen, and i doubt they’ll put it in the finale, if its not in the book……
yes, kataang is oedipus, i totally agree with you there, but they arent REALY related, it just feels that way to us…..also, han was just a bad boy, never their enemy, so its just really different
also, i do agree that zuko is a better match for her, i mean, after jet, its pretty clear what kataras type is: tall, ruggedly handsome, emotionally damaged and/or hurt by the fire nation (lol) and, yes, a bad boy.
so there i can see the han solo thing, but han didnt have an ex girlfriend who was willing to throw daggers at his crazy bitch of a fire bending sister for him, so much different, see?
in sw it was jut bound to happen, but see, there was like no tension in a luke/leia relationship, it was all about han/leia, especially in TESB, starting from the beginning, save that disgustingly incest like kiss beyween them after they brought luke in, which she only did to piss off han, so there you go……
its just totally different, han wasnt their enemy, ever, and didnt have a gf
and aang and katara arent really related, no matter what mike and bryan lead us to believe….
and i mentioned the padme/anakin thing before, about it not going well…..
and no, kataang does not rule, hahaha
hey dont get me wrong, i think katara had to be blind not to see the hottnes of zuko, and then, on top of that, be in love with the dorky bald kid, i mean, ewww……
god, its sick, i cant even think about it………..

XD As always- your analysis doesn’t fail to impress… and after trying to listen to my first TZO spoiler podcast- ^^o I’m happy to say that… I prefer your take on it much more. Much… much more. *shivers* Um! Um but yesh! Turtle lion! Thank you! for mentioning him! He’s been bugging me since he arrived. I figured he was some Dues ex Machina addition and… XD Its great to hear another’s opinion on it. Oh! and that you couldn’t understand him even in a 6 year old’s book is absolutly priceless!!!! *laughs* Oh dannng~ XD Too great!
Ah! and then all of those plot holes! I… *hangs head in shame* I didn’t notice all of them. I mean… beyond the turtle lion… the only other things that really bugged me were 1. Lack of bloodbending, 2. Lack of Swordsmanship and 3. Lack of Kataang build-up… because you know… the whole rejection thing just a few days before. And the sudden realization that the war was over so ‘love’ was ok… or something. ^^o yeah. I… need sleep or something. But! But I just wanted ta thank you! XD It’s listening to stuff like this that allows me ta think seriously about episodes~ *hug* you guys rule sooooo much!
